Story shared: The mini-van

I am not about to explain the nineteen sixties to anyone who wasn't a teenager at that time. Mr Maier's son Will and I peaked as sixties teenagers in the summer of 1970 when we both turned nineteen. I cannot remember why, exactly: but Will, myself, and four other guys purchased a 1965 Dodge cargo van intending to go to Alaska. Will's dad had a "pit" in his garage, and both had some mechanical expertise, so we parked the van at their house while we got our ducks in order and tried to save money. I lived a block away and stopped by often. Over the course of a month's time, the van gained a roof rack, plus an air shield in front of the roof rack , and headlight guards to protect the glass from flying rocks.

But, the van was only a two-seater.

Then, Mr Maier went on to invent the mini-van some 15 years before Chrysler. He picked up four more bucket seats from a junkyard and bolted them to the floor. Seatbelts and all. So, now we had a van with three rows of bucket seats. It was quite a trip.

Uncle Willie as I lovingly called him was my uncle and Godfather. I have not seen him in many years but I have many fond memories of him. He loved to share his stories, especially of "The Farm" and I enjoyed listening. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Maier Family. Uncle Willie you were loved and you will be miss.....
